Utilization of WhatsApp for Health-Related Message Broadcast in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria

WhatsApp is regarded as Africa’s most popular messaging platform and it is especially the most influential social media platform in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. This paper aims at determining the utilization of WhatsApp for health-related messages broadcast in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State in Nigeria. This paper adopts the survey design in which a questionnaire was used to collect data from200 residents of the local government area. Probability sampling technique of cluster sampling and non-probability sampling of convenience sampling were adopted. A response rate of 87% and a usable return of 82% were achieved. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The study revealed that WhatsApp was widely used by the respondents and the use of WhatsApp was significant in helping the respondents of the local government area to obtain health-related messages. This is a pointer to the fact that these people already appreciate the capability of WhatsApp in their day-to-day communication. The study recommends that strong attention be drawn to the identification and utilization of WhatsApp as an important communication channel for health practitioners to relay health-related messages to different people.
